I am, David Billesbach, a self-taught artist, though here have been several formal learning situations that have helped me to get started and expand my knowledge of oil painting.
Designing costumes, masks and walking big heads for Mardi Gras and Jazz Festival New Orleans were my first introduction to creative arts. From there in the early 90's I began to study drawing with Allison Stewart and still life oil painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in New Orleans
18 years later, I was drawn back to painting expressionistic portraits and studying with Daniel Loge in Grand Junction, Colorado. In summer of 2018, I studied with the impressionist artist Don Sahli, which provided exposure to plein air painting, expanding my use of color and impasto techniques to create more textures. Most importantly, it got me outside painting Nature.
Being outside exploring Nature by painting my interpretation of what I see and feel, has become my work's passion. I am excited to share with other artists the experience of painting outside. If you are interested contact me.
I am very fortunate to in a beautiful mountain landscape in Buena Vista, Colorado with my amazing wife, Jamie. There is an abundance of unique land forms, plant life, and rivers/streams/waterfalls to paint everyday.
